The Chelmsford Open Space Stewardship – What We Are and How to Get InvolvedThe Chelmsford Open Space Stewardship is an independent group of volunteers working with the Chelmsford Conservation Commission. It was established in November 2005 by residents who enjoy hiking, being productive and doing things outdoors. While the Conservation Commission manages and protects open space property in the town of Chelmsford, the Stewards maintain and improve the trail systems within these open spaces – anything from picking up trash and keeping the trails free of fallen trees to replacing worn out bridges and kiosks. Stewards provide a daily presence and ongoing maintenance so these special properties can be enjoyed by all.To enjoy the open spaces in town, you are at the right place for photos, locations and to download trail maps. The trails are perfect for anyone who enjoys a leisurely walk or a quick run through the woods. Loop trails start and end at the parking lots and run anywhere from ½ mile to three miles in length. For those interested in volunteering, click on our contact links on the left or call Phil Stanway at 978-273-1474. The program welcomes people who are retired, families, scout troops and companies looking to give back to the community with a few volunteer hours. In less than two years the Stewards have rehabilitated and improved trails on close to 1,000 acres of Chelmsford Open Space. The program has a lot to offer and we need motivated people to help keep it growing. Crooked Spring parking lot and main bridge took a huge beating last week. The main damage is in the main lot. DPW has been alerted and once they have a plan we will let everyone know.
Click here for Pictures of the lot I know lots of people hate the cold but is does give us changes to explore areas of the open space that are far too wet in the summer. This give us a better understanding of the whole sites and how best to maintain it. This weekend was Deep Brook Click here for Picture of Upstream at Deep Brook Just about everyone has seen me with "Jerry the Open Space Dog". Here is a snapshot at what he does on a weekend with me. For four years, the Chelmsford Open Space Stewardship Program has helped to maintain about 900 acres of open space land in town, with volunteers donating more than 20,000 hours of their time maintaining trails, building foot bridges and kiosks, creating our community garden, beautifying the town, rallying local organizations and businesses, and much more. They do this all with an annual budget of $200 plus generous donations.
Friday, March 5th, will be the first fundraiser for COSS - the theme will be a roast of COSS founder and lead steward Phil Stanway in celebration of his 50th birthday, but it's also about all of the volunteers in the program. It's a night of fun entertainment, brief information about the program, as well as music and dinner at the beautiful new Chelmsford Elks. The goal is to raise money to ensure the stewards have the resources they need to continue what they're doing. The event will take place from 6 - 10 p.m and tickets are $25 each ($20 of which will go directly to COSS). To order tickets, please contact Joanne Stanway at 978-273-1473 or jstanway@comcast.net.
